Dorothea Lange.

I've always found Dorothea Lange's photographs from the Great Depression hauntingly beautiful.
I think - even now - her work reminds us that beauty can be found in unlikely places and that to respond to injustice, we must first learn how to see it.

Dorothea herself

Dorothea once said: “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” Indeed, how many new details, shapes, shades, and interactions a single photograph can reveal to us. Stopping time and freezing movement, a camera works like both a time machine and a microscope to show us what the human sight would never capture on its own. And here comes another quote about photography: “A photograph is secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.” This may sound like a conflict of interests, but the truth is that many of the greatest human achievements stemmed from some conflicts…

I always enjoy when bloggers post 'tours' of their homes!
Unfortunately I decided to do this about five minutes after I'd emptied the contents of my bag all over the floor to find a piece of paper with some notes scrawled on it. Always the way! So instead of a proper tour I thought I'd take some shots of random things so you could get a feel for the place.

Keekee is always around.

Amazing lamp from the 30s that my Grandma gave me.

Two-headed duckling and Día de los Muertos skull.

I love old mirrors. I have six in one room!

Perfume, tacky religious things and another mirror.

Christmas decoration from Paperchase hanging in the doorway.

Both sides of my hallway are covered with framed prints.

Lotherton Hall

Some photos from my last trip to Lotherton Hall. I love this place! The bird garden is so amazing. More importantly there's a good amount of taxidermy in the house!

By Dianne.

By Dianne.

I realised that I started this blog and never did a proper introduction post. So I thought I’d do one now!

Okay... where so I start... I’m Lauren. Lolo to some.

Things I enjoy daydreaming about; being a millionaire living on the French Riviera in the 20s, how amazing it would've been to be friends with Joan Vollmer - all writing, trips to Mexico and volcanos, gin and  benzedrine, hot summer nights in the 1940s American South.

I like; reading, writing, talking, photography, making magic in the darkroom, polaroids, being passionate about things, philosophy, explorers, Naval history, dancing, dancing barefoot, dancing on tables, sloe gin, cocktails, cheese, cats, music, bright lights, rainy streets, big city, big hair, travelling, live music, black, leather, American Apparel, politics, beaches, sun, bare legs, old films, Bette Davis, Tennessee Williams, tattoos, Ryan Adams, bluegrass, alt country music, Hunter S Thompson, large bodies of water, boats, tall trees, new ideas, new people, getting crafty, using my hands, making things.

I am; always learning, trying to be a better person, trying to think more about the bigger picture.
Other places you can find me!/lolo_holmes

Tell me more about youself! Do we have much in common?! Also leave me links to places where I can learn more about you. People are my thing.

I haven't been on tumblr for quite a while but I decided to have a massive trawl through it the other evening.
These are some things that I'm really loving at the moment....

Fantastic quote.

"OMG... Becky's not even hot." This is easily the best advert ever. I love this man.

I think I might have to try and make myself a necklace like this.

Strike 84 - My Grandfather was a miner, I really want to get a mining related tattoo.

More than anything right now I'm so excited about the prospect of getting my dark room equipment set up again! I've got some old negatives from the 60s that I really want to print and I'm got an idea for a project I want to work on - hopefully I'll be making a start on that this Wednesday evening.
Of course when I start printing I'll scan them and put them up here!

What images are inspiring you right now? Actually they don't have to be inspiring! I'd just love to see any images you seen recently that you really love! Throw some links at me lovelies.

Flat mates.

Taken in May - This matches my mood today.

So I've lived on my own for about 5 years now. Over the past few months I've been thinking that actually it might be quite nice to have a flat mate (read - I need to economise).
A conversation with a friend on the subject got my thinking about what qualities I would look for in a potential flat mate... and also what I should tell them - or warn them? - about my living habits.
Soooo. I thought I'd make a list!

Potential flat mate must -
  • Read! FHM, Mens Health and The Sport DO NOT count. You much read actual books. Ideally classic literature - I get through books at an alarming rate and I'm always on the look out for a book recommendation. Or if you have a book I can borrow, even better! This makes it sound like I'm a book snob but I'm really not. I read Star by Pamela Anderson and I enjoyed it!
  • Be okay with cats. I have a cat. She is white. I will supply lint rollers as and when needed.
  • Be able to discourse on politics, sexism, history, feminism, and lots of other things that end in -ism.
  • Be able to cope with the fact that sometimes I suffer from insomnia so will be pottering round at all hours. I have also been known to hoover at 4am.
  • Not tell me about my odd behaviour. Hey, do you really think that I don't know that eating half a block of cheese out of the wrapper for dinner while stood in-front of the open fridge is weird? I am aware of this thanks!!
  • Cook sometimes! I love cooking like but I don't want to have to do it all the time. Or at least procure us some takeout or something.
  • Ideally be good at 'man-tasks'. Whether you are male or not. I'm fucking sick of putting my own shelves up. And changing fuses.
  • Also be able to cope with the fact I rarely make tea or coffee - I hardly drink them. I also drink juice from the carton. If you drink it after me I'm pretty sure you won't die.
  • Have a tv, microwave, toaster, kettle. I have none of these things.
  • Drink! The thing I miss most about living with other people is social booze time in the living room.
  • Not constantly bitch about your job, the weather, life, how hungover you are. Go post it on facebook yeah? It would drive me to murder/suicide.
Oh I thought of another one! I have genius/insane ideas. I like to share them. If they're insane please talk me down. But if they are genius you have to up for getting involved!

Hmmm. I wonder if I'll actually be able to find a flat mate that could put up with me? Angry night-owl that eats/drinks straight from the fridge... but hey, I cook a damn good risotto.

A couple of weekends ago I stumbled down to Righteous at Sela Bar to watch some of my favourite bands play together.
Unfortunately the lighting in the bar is terrible. And red! So it's pretty hard to take photographs in there. Although to be honest I'm often too busy enjoying myself to worry about taking photos.

It's been a bit quiet round here recently due to the fact that I've been ridiculously busy - but I'm hoping next week to get back to normal and bring back I fucking love it Monday and outfit post Wednesday.
