I remember Halloween.

Jeez. I've just realised that I have a full on caffeine addiction. This is something I’m going to try and break at some point. But right now it’s like sweet jesus I need this to get through the day.

I was going to write a weekend round up post but I seem to have lost my mojo. Let me see if I can condense everything –

Saturday – Reetsweet Craft Fair at Nation of Shopkeepers. This was loads of fun. As the Reetsweet events always are! I spent Friday night getting everything ready so Saturday morning was nice and easy. I chucked everything in a bag and headed down to the venue for 11am to set up. It was nice to catch up with some crafty people I haven’t seen for a while and meet some new ones. The amount of people checking out the stalls was kind of steady but definitely seemed to pick up between 3 – 5pm. Some well good nachos and cupcakes were eaten and Claire (who makes amazing wooden brooches by the way) and I decided to share a table at the Reetsweet event at the Corn Exchange on June 5th.
At 5pm I packed up and made my way home, inhaled some food and turned around and went straight back into the city centre to meet Sofia for some cocktails at Neon Cactus. They do the best strawberry daiquiri in Leeds hands down. HANDS DOWN FOLKS. If you ever find yourself in Leeds please go and try one. They will not disappoint. After that everything is a bit hazy. There were more cocktails at Milo. Then I went to Santiago to see some bands play. I bumped into loads of people that I hadn’t seen for ages which is always good! I also spent a good amount of the night covered in vodka and lemonade (not mine) which was a bit bum but the good far outweighed the bad.

Sunday – Despite feeling like I’d been hit by a bus I managed to get out of bed and go have a meeting with my new boss Michaela. It was awesome and I really can’t wait to start working with her. Then I went home and didn’t do much of anything.

Monday – I love bank holidays. LOVE THEM. Seriously. So despite still feeling a bit crap I decided I was going to make the most of it. The first thing I did was alter an American Apparel skirt that I got from them in their April fools sale. It was a pencil skirt but the length just didn’t suit me. I figure I’m too short for pencil skirts. Anyway, 15 minutes with the sewing machine and I had a mini skirt! Problem solved! It worked out really well actually and I wore it for the rest of the day – I also realised that everything I was wearing (apart from my Converse) was from American Apparel *facepalm*.
In the afternoon I met up with Kaytie. We had some amazing veggie enchiladas before going to our first pole dancing class. Hilariously we got the sessions wrong and showed up to the advanced class. But it actually worked out quite well. It was so much fun and I’ll definitely be going back. I am actually looking at poles on ebay at the moment. That’s how much I enjoyed it!

Hang on. I was supposed to be condensing all this guff. Eh. I'll leave it at that then. Some photos from the craft fair will be posted tomorrow.

One last thing - last night I listened to this well interesting podcast about terror management. Basically it's a theory that we construct culture and all it's trappings in an unconscious effort to create meaning in life and to distract us from becoming obsessed with our inevitable death. Apparently there's a process called distal defense where people cling more strongly to the culture they identify with when faced with their own mortality. In the podcast they talked about some research that was done about this process involving judges handing out sentences and it seemed to prove it existed.
If you're interested read more about it here and here. I'd like to know what you think.

It's no secret that I have all the love for Courtney. Hole were one of the first bands I really got into and I think Courtney is a great songwriter and actress (see - Beat). Obviously I can't deny the fact that she's made some bad choices and done some stupid things. But hey, haven't we all? I've always felt like the media (and people in general) are a lot more judgemental of her then they are of men that have made similar mistakes - by which I mean overdoing the drugs in a really public way. Anyhoo, the point of this was I found this recent interview with her and you guys should  check it out.

Diana Mini.

I'll be the first person to admit that the Diana Mini is pretty ropey camera. However... it seems to have become my go-to camera due to it's tininess and how light it is. I often throw it in my bag if I'm heading out.

This is the first time I've used it at a show. I decided to shoot some photos to finish off a roll of film and just hoped for the best! I'm actually quite pleased with how they turned out.
I'm not sure what film I used but they're cross processed. I used the flash and had the shutter set to the 'B' setting.

London

On Friday afternoon I left work and walked down to the station to get the train to London. I've been heading down there pretty regularly during the past nine months and I normally get the coach  this has made me appreciate the train like you would not believe! I had a little snooze and listened to a couple of podcasts and before I knew it I was at Kings Cross.

I headed straight to The Oxford in Kentish Town for Hazels bon voyage party. It was a fantastic night! Hazel knows some really interesting people and it was great meeting some of them for the first time. I managed to pop out of The Oxford for a bit and went up the road to meet Dianne for a drink! When I went back to see Hazel we spent all night reminiscing and drinking and catching up. We made our way home in the early hours of the morning via the chippy and crashed.

I'm going to miss my trips down to London to visit Hazel. Her house really became a home away from home for me towards the end of last year  in fact we use to joke about that every time I set up camp in her living room  my second home!

The next morning I found myself going on an early morning Diet Coke run to the local corner shop and then we sat on the sofa surrounded by Hazels belonging in boxes talking about the future. We went out to the local greasy spoon for breakfast before packing her stuff into the car and preparing for the drive up north. While Hazel was bringing her boxes out from the house I sat on the boot of the car; enjoying the sun and people watching. The area that she lives in is lovely. Walking distance to Camden yet out of the way and pretty quiet and it's sad to think I'll never walk to her house from the tube station again. Or see Georgie the cat. It's the little things you know.

Our goodbye in Leeds was slightly weepy. But it's not like it's goodbye forever. It's just going to be a little longer till I see her again. The world's getting smaller everyday and as I was telling one of her friends on Friday night; Australia is only as far away as you make it in your head.
I've started saving for a trip over to see her already. I'm thinking sometime next year and I'd love to visit my old friend Alison again. Perhaps swing by NZ too. I might as well try and knock some stuff of that bucket list right?

Do you have certain smells that remind you of places? I'm not sure why but every time I use Burts Bees pomegranate lipbalm it makes me think of London. Just like if I use the perfume 'Stella' I could close my eyes and imagine I'm in Australia again.

Etsy.

Yesterday was a good post day! I got some supplies that I'd been waiting for.

Carnelian

Amethyst

I turned the carnelian stones into necklaces last night and got them up in the etsy store.

Finished necklaces!

I think with the amethyst I'm to string a few together horizontally. I would've liked to have hung them vertically but they're not centre drilled! Hmmm. I need to play around with them a bit more.

Today has been another good post day. I've recieved pyrite, pearls and turquoise. I can't wait to make these guys into necklaces. But alas the dress I'm waiting for from ASOS has not arrived.

After work I'm getting the train down to London to see Hazel and Dianne. It should make a nice change from getting the coach! I've got a provisional plan involving the coach to the Netherlands in a month or so. I figure it's a good way of seeing some different scenery. Also I'm sick of flying. Leeds Bradford Airport is horrible.
The other day I decided to subscribe to Lonely Planet Magazine. They've got a sweet offer on at the moment where you get 5 issues for £5. I won't recieve my first issue to next month but I've heard really good things about it. I'll be sure to post a review! I get the feeling that when I read it I'm just going to want to pack up and go exploring.

Bucket list...

A list of things to do before you “kick the bucket”.

I always have trouble actually sitting down and writing these things. I start and then get distracted. But I figure I can keep adding to this - and hopefully mark things off!

In no real order..

  • Go to a shooting range.
  • Visit NZ.
  • Visit the east coast of Australia (and Alison) again.
  • Take the train to Switzerland.
  • Go on the Trans Siberian Express.
  • Have a photography book published.
  • Learn to properly ride a horse.
  • Go on a roadtrip in America.
  • Fly First Class on a long haul flight.
  • Learn silversmithing.
  • Learn to taxidermy.
  • Learn to sail.
  • Learn to drive.
  • Live somewhere that has a spare room I can turn into a darkroom (I have the equipment, I need to use it!)
  • Own a Leica film SLR.
  • Have an exhibition of my photography.
  • Own a bike again.
  • Be my own boss.
  • Go to a gig at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.
  • Hire a bike in Amsterdam, take a boat across the IJ and ride out through the medieval villages to Marken.
  • Visit and photograph the Taj Mahal.
  • Sell my wares at a craft fair in the Netherlands.
  • Visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.
  • Tattoo myself.
  • Tattoo someone else.
  • Do a photoshoot at the Chelsea Hotel, NYC.
  • Get tattooed by Thomas Hooper.

There's a lot more I'd like to add to that. Mainly involving tattoos and places I want to visit. But I'll save them for another day!

Dublin...

For the last week in April I flew over to Dublin (£35 return -thank you RyanAir) to spend some time with my friend Laura. I loose track of how long we've known each other. I think about 5 years. It seems like a lot longer. She's one of those really great friends where you don't have to speak to each other very often but as soon as you see each other it's like you've never been apart.

We spent most of the time wandering round and Laura showed me her favourite places. One of the most interesting places we went to was the Natural History Museum. There is a taxidermied badger! That you can touch!! And the giant deer skeletons are pretty jaw dropping.

The highlight of the trip, aside from spending some quality time with Laura, was definitely going for tea and cake every day! The last place we went to before I went to the airport was The Queen of Tarts. It was sooooo good. I recommend the Victorian sponge cake with fresh strawberries!
